Upholstering a Simple Ottoman

Upholstering a Simple Ottoman

5 Days, Open to All

Spring 2026
June 1-5

This class will teach you the basic skills and tools needed to begin upholstering. Through minimalist design and simple construction, students will craft their own ottoman specific to their skill level and aesthetic. From simple wooden base construction to discussions on proportions, style, and pattern, students will be guided through the process from design to execution. Examples of trim and finishing details round out the process. No experience necessary!

The class will focus on the creation of very simple upholstered forms. Ottomans are a “gateway” form; easy enough for beginners to grasp, but complex enough to inform the construction of more complex upholstered pieces. Square and rectangular shapes can yield a surprising range of variations when materials and proportions are adjusted and personalized. By the end of the workshop, you will have a greater understanding of design processes and a utilitarian artwork to take home with you.

Learning Outcomes

Students will learn how to build a simple frame with legs, to stretch jute webbing, to add foam and batting, and to attach fabric in a professional way.  Sewing, while welcomed, isn’t mandatory for this process.

Tools

None.

Prerequisites

Open to All. Although some woodworking and sewing experience is helpful!
