Work with turner and artist Beth Ireland in this week-long workshop where the worlds of wood turning and printmaking collide. Prepare to expand your creative process and open your mind to how these two mediums can co-exist. Create rolled prints that become wall art, apply your prints to sculpture or containers, and explore your creativity in this supportive learning environment.

This is the class where woodturning and printmaking collide! On day one, we’ll get everyone oriented to the lathe, its parts, and basic turning. The goal will be getting everyone comfortable turning basic cylinders using the roughing gouge.

Once everyone is feeling comfortable on the lathe, we’ll turn to the basics of relief printing and then carve your imagery on the cylinders to create beautiful, rolled prints. Once the prints are dried, students will use the bandsaw and lathe to create personalized containers and sculptures, connecting paper to wood in a variety of ways.

Printmakers will learn to expand their printmaking into 3D. Turners will learn how 2D can elevate the objects they are making. The lathe can often be considered an intimidating tool to learn. Shake off those worries, and come learn how to safely use the lathe, bandsaw, and carving tools. This is a perfect class to get a taste of two great art forms and make fun personalized objects, in a supportive, creative atmosphere!

Students will learn the fundamentals of wood turning, as well as the basics of printmaking. These include - use of roughing gouge, spindle gouge, and parting tool. Learn to create cylinders, rings, and lids. Printmaking basics will include an understanding of paper, print inks, and image making.

This class is both for people who consider themselves technically oriented as well as those who consider themselves artists. Will you resolve your creative pursuits in turning? In carving? In printing? Come find out!
