Class size: 10

In this five-day course, you will build a sculptural mirror frame of your own design with the process of bricklay lamination.
This design & build course is a great introduction to woodworking through a creative and sculptural lens. Under the guidance of furniture maker Lacey Carnahan, students will be building their own sculptural mirror frame with the technique of bricklay lamination.
First, students will learn how to safely use stationary power tools to mill rough lumber to a specific dimension. Then you will learn the process of bricklaying. This technique involves gluing boards together in staggered layers to form strong, stable curves. These interlocking blocks mimic traditional brickwork and can easily create many different shapes. With the support of the instructor, every student will come up with their own design.
Next, you will shape your mirror frame using rasps, files, and abrasive tools to create simple texture carving by hand. You will also have the chance to learn the basics of power carving with flexshaft tools and angle grinders.
Finally, you will dabble in finishes like milk paint and clear sealers to end the week with a beautiful piece of art you can hang in your home or gift to a loved one.
The goal of this course is to create a safe and fun learning environment for you to ask all the questions and to feel supported and comfortable expanding your skills and realising your vision.
Note: This project will not include the mirror element, just the frame. You will make a pattern for the exact shape of your mirror and will be given information about how to get a mirror cut to those dimensions.
