John Marckworth has worked professionally as a carpenter, custom cabinetmaker and furniture maker for more then 30 years. He operated his own custom woodworking business – Marckworth Specialty Woodworking – in Port Townsend for over 16 years, working with homeowners, designers, architects and contractors on a wide variety of residential and commercial projects. His work has appeared in a number of books and magazines. He is the author of Beautiful Wooden Projects for Outdoor Living, published by Popular Wooeworking Books. In 2007 he partnered with Jim Tolpin and Tim Lawson to found the Port Townsend School of Woodworking.
"Craftsmanship is an ongoing journey of discovery and self-realization. I attempt to create woodwork imbued with style, design integrity, and meticulous craftsmanship. Since all my projects are custom, I have had the opportunity to design and build in many different styles. I love working with wood – investigating, experimenting, and mastering new methods and techniques while building on the solid foundations of the past. I am inspired and strengthened by a quote from Robert Perry (painter, potter, poet, sculptor, filmmaker, photographer, muralist, printmaker, and teacher, 1927-1998), “The hindsight allows one to distill the false starts, the wrong directions and the outright mistakes from what, through time, adds up to direction.” We all learn by doing, so it only makes sense that we allow ourselves to enjoy both the process and the results!"
John has also organized projects in partnership with Fort Worden including the Windows Restoration Project and the Porch Furniture Project.
