Ian Gill
Ian is an artist who recently became a Shop Technician at PTSW after relocating to Port Townsend with his family. Ian’s own work is small, tactile, and made to be held. He moves between fine metalsmithing, welding, wooden jewelry, home goods, and photography, and is happiest when a piece fits in the palm of his hand. This is in contrast to the work he did in Seattle for the last 20 years, working as an artist assistant and fabricator on large public sculptures and installations.
Away from work and his own studio, Ian enjoys wandering both new spaces and old ones like Fort Worden, where he finds beauty in abandoned decay. He can also be found relaxing in a hammock in the woods, slowing down and searching the forest for interesting moss and lichen, or combing the beach for rocks. Ian is a lifelong learner always looking for new processes and techniques to add to his knowledge.
Craft is the slow practice of showing up, listening to the material, and learning from what breaks.
