About

Lightweight, affordable, and naturally beautiful, wood is an ideal material

for making jewelry. This workshop will focus on using simple tools and safe

techniques on a wide range of commercial, scrap, and found woods. Students will shape and finish at least one pendant, necklace, or pair of earrings using basic woodworking techniques and readily available tools such as saws, files, burnishers, drills, and sandpaper. Demonstrations will also introduce simple but effective findings, durable surface finishes, and advanced decorative techniques including resin inlay, pique, setting stones, and katagami patterning.

Class Description

Day 1

  • Safety
  • Earrings from flat sheet:  cutting, filing, faceting, scraping, burnishing, making and attaching findings, waxing
  • Working with found/natural woods
  • Demos and work time

Day 2

  • Apply decorative treatments to earrings or sample blocks:
  • Paints, stains, seals
  • Carbonizing, woodburning
  • Pique, katagami, and resin inlay
  • Setting cabochons
  • Demos and work time
